Laos climate

Many people as us when the best period to go to Laos. For these persons we added this section about the climate.

Laos has a tropical climate and generally the temperature, are high in the country. Laos has two seasons, the rainy season is from the beginning of May to the end of September, and the dry season is from October through April, this is to visit Laos. The yearly average temperature is about 28 degrees Celsius, rising to a maximum of 38 degrees Celsius during April and May. Below you find an overview of the different seasons in Laos.


The dry season
From October to April the dry season prevails. It is not really hot and dry.
This period is much more pleasant to visit the country then during the rainy season.
During this period most tourists visit the country. The roads are more passable in a country with many unpaved roads, rain makes traveling a lot harder.
At night it cools down, In Vientiane a minimum temperature of 19 degrees Celsius is to be expected during January. In mountainous areas, however, temperature drops to as low as 14-15 degrees Celsius during the winter months, and during cold nights, can easily reach the freezing point.

The rainy season
This season lasts from May to September and is also called the monsoon. during this period it is very humid.
Often it rains just a few hours per day (usually in the afternoon) but sometimes it rains all day in a row.
It is also possible that in the rainy season, a whole day or several days are dry, this remains unpredictable.
In the rainy season travelling can take a little longer because dirt and paved roads may be flooded and the dirt roads can turn into big mud puddles.
Travelling is more difficult but it is certainly not impossible.
The average precipitation is highest in Southern Laos, where the Annamite Mountains receive over 3,000 mm. annually. In Vientiane rainfall is about 1,500-2,000 mm., and in the Northern provinces only 1,000-1,500 mm.
